Rumi Poems

"You dance inside my heart
where no one sees you,
but sometimes I do.
That sight becomes this art."
- rumi

Suddenly the drunken sweetheart
appeared out of the door.
She drank a cup of ruby wine
and sat by my side.
Seeing and holding the lockets
of her hair.
My face became all eyes, and my
eyes all hands.
-From Thief of Sleep

The Freshness

When it's cold and raining,
you are more beautiful.

And the snow brings me even
closer to your lips.

The inner secret,that which
was never born, you are that
freshness, I am with you now.

I can't explain the goings,
or the comings. You enter suddenly,
and I am nowhere again. Inside
the majesty.
-From Soul of Rumi

Some Kiss We Want

There is some kiss we want
with our whole live, the touch
of spirit on the body.
Seawater begs the pearl to break
its shell.

And the lily, how passionately it
needs some wild darling!
At night, I open the window and ask
the moon to come and press its face
against mine.

Breathe into me.
Close the language- door and open
the love window.
The moon won't use the door,
only the window.
-From Soul of Rumi

"This is love:
to fly toward a secret sky,
to cause a hundred veils to
fall each moment.
First to let go of life.
Finally, to take a step
without feet."
- Rumi

Stay closed, my heart

Stay close,my heart,
to the one who knows
your way; Come into
the shade of the tree
that allays has fresh
Don't stroll idly through
the bazaar of the perfume-markers:
stay in the shop of the sugar-seller.
If you don't find true balance,
anyone can deceive you; anyone
can trick out of a thing of straw,
and make you take it for gold.
Don't squat with a bowl before
every boiling pot; in each pot
on the fire you find very
different things.
Not all sugarcanes have sugar,
not all abysses a peak; not all
eyes posses vision, not every
sea is full of pearls.
O nightingale, with your voice
of dark honey! Go on lamenting!
Only your drunken ecstasy can
pierce the rock's hard heart!
Surrender yourself, and if you
cannot be welcome by the friend,
know that you are rebelling inwardly
like a thread that doesn't want to go
through the needle's eyes!
The awakened heart is a lamp; protect
it by the him of your robe!
Hurry and get out of this wind,
for the weather is bad. And when you've
left this storm, you will come to a
fountain; you'll find a friend there
who will always nourish your soul.
And with your soul always green, you'll
grow into a tall tree flowering always
with sweet light-fruit, whose growth is interior.

The Breeze at Dawn

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don't go back to sleep.

You must ask for what you really want.
Don't go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth across the doorsill where the two worlds touch.

The door is round and open.
Don't go back to sleep.
- rumi

Rumi Poems

When the rose dies,
it falls open, spreading
You will become a window
for every house.
You will be a rose garden in
every field.
- rumi

The ship sunk in love

Should love's heart
rejoice unless burn?
For my heart is love's
If you will burn your
house,burn it,love!
Who will say,'it's
not allowed?'
Burn this house thoroughly!
The lover's house improves
with fire.
From now on I will make
burning my aim.
From now on I will make
burning my aim,for I am
like the candle: burning
only makes me brighter.
Abondan sleep tonight; traverse
from one night the region of sleepless.
Look upon these lover who have become
distraught and like moths have died
in union with one beloved.
Look upon this ship of God's creatures
and see how it is sunk in love.

The Awakening

In the early dawn
of happiness you gave
me three kisses so that
I would wake up to this
moment of love.

I tried to remember in
my heart what I'd dreamt
about during the night
before I became aware
of this moving of life.

I found my dreams
but the moon took me away.
It lifted me up to
the firmament and suspended
me there.
I saw how my heart had fallen
on your path singing song.

Between my love and my heart
things were happening which
slowly slowly made me recall

You amuse me with your
touch although I can't
see your hands.
You have kissed me with
tenderness although I
haven't seen your lips.
You are hidden from me.

But it is you who keep
me alive.

Perhaps the time will come
when you will tire of kisses
I shall be happy even for
insults from you.
I only ask that you keep
some attention on me.
- The Love Poems Of Rumi

Love asks us to enjoy our life
for nothing good can come of death.
Who is alive? I ask.
Those who are born of love.

Seek is in love itself,
Seek love in us ourselves.
Sometimes I venerate love,
Sometimes it generate me.
- Rumi, The Joy That Wounds: The Love Poems Of Rumi

Oh you, straying heart, just come!
Oh you, aching liver, just come!
If the path to the gate is closed,
Take the way by the wall, but come!
- Rumi, The Joy That Wounds: The Love Poems Of Rumi

A Moment of Happiness

A moment of happiness,
You and I sitting on
the verandah,apparently two,
but one in soul, you and I.
We feel the flowing water
of life here, you and I,
with the garden's beauty
and birds singing.
The star's will be watching us,
and we will show them what it is
to be a thin crescent moon.
You and I unselfed, will be
together, indifferent to idle
speculation, you and I.
The parrots of heaven will be
cracking sugar as we laugh together,
you and I.
In one form upon this earth, and in
another form in a timeless sweet land.
- Rumi,Translate By James Cowen

I swear, since seeing your face,
the whole wold is fraud and fantasy.
The garden is bewildered as to
what is leaf or blossom.
The distracted birds can't
distinguish the birdseed from
the snare.

A house of love with no limits,
a presence more beautiful than
venus or the moon, a beauty whose
image fills the mirror of the heart.
- Rumi's Divan of Shems of Tabriz.

I will soothe you and heal you,
I will bring you roses. I too
have been covered with thorns.
- Rumi

Love is not written on paper,
for paper can be erased.
Nor it is etched on stone,
for stone can be broken.
But it is inscribed on
a heart and there it shall
remain forever.
- Rumi

Weeping, then laughing.
The power of love came
into me, and I became
fierce like a lion,
then tender like the
evening star.
- Rumi

The Joy That Hurts

You try to be faithful
And sometimes you're cruel.
You are mine. Then, you leave.
Without you, I can't cope.

And when you take the lead,
I become your footstep.
Your absence leaves a void.
Without you, I can't cope.

You have disturbed my sleep,
You have wrecked my image.
You have set me me apart.
Without you, I can't cope.
- Rumi, The Joy That Wounds: The Love Poem Of Rumi.

The wailing of broken hearts
is the door way to God.
- Rumi

I can heal a broken
heart with a smile.
- Rumi

Do not grieve.
Anything you lose
comes round in
another form.
- Rumi

The wounds is the place
where the light enters you.

This being human is a guesthouse.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness come
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty it furniture, still, treat each
guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out for
some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame,
the malice, meet them at the door
laughing, and invite all in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent as
an guide from beyond.
